When it comes to replacing carpets, it’s easy to see how the years escape you, one minute you are enjoying the smell of a freshly laid carpet, the next it’s more like, what IS that smell?! I once viewed a house where the owner was boasting about the original carpets…the house was built in 1975 might I add. Needless to say, they almost disintegrated when removed. Anyway, I digress, the moral of the story here is just because they may seem ok to you, in reality, carpets should be replaced every 5 to 15 years, which may sound quite vague but if you imagine hallways for example and other high traffic areas, they would probably need replacing sooner than say bedrooms, but there are some telltale signs to look out for, such as:
- Stains
Muddy footprints, creative kids and the dreaded topple of a coffee cup (or worse, red wine glass) are just some of the culprits that can leave stains on your once clean carpets. The key to stain removal is to act quickly to avoid it sinking into the fibres, but if you’ve tried and better tried to remove stains that just won’t budge, then it could be time to replace. But if you fancy one last attempt at stain removal then check out our blog on how to clean carpets for more information.
- Smells
Pet smells, stains and a general build-up of dirt can leave a less than fragrant aroma to your carpets. If you’ve tried every which way to put the freshness back (there’s a song in there somewhere) but to no avail, then why not treat your feet with a brand new carpet.
- Appearance
If your once beautiful carpets have now lost their fullness, freshness, colour or appeal that they once had then a new carpet could inject some life into a lacklustre room. A stretched, threadbare carpet with flattened fibres is not a good look therefore we guarantee a new carpet will transform your room.
- Allergies
Perhaps not one you’d instantly associate with your carpets but after years of use, you’d be astounded at the level of dust and dirt that may be lurking beneath the surface of your carpet. This type of build-up could have an adverse effect on those with respiratory conditions, dust allergies, pet hair allergies and mould allergies caused by tiny particles, all of which can cause unpleasant side effects such as coughing, sneezing, runny nose, eye-watering and rashes, so if you find allergies are on the rise in your home then it could be time to change your carpet.
- Underlay
Is there any better feeling than a freshly laid carpet and squishy underlay? We don’t think so, but underlay isn’t just for underfoot comfort, it has a whole host of other benefits including noise reduction and insulation so it’s only natural to expect this to flatten after time, meaning it could be time to replace and restore.
